Kain Kreatif: Design and Create Your Own Malay Textiles
(as part of AKAR Festival 2023)
This September holidays, visit MHC’s pop-up at The Arts House with your friends and family to learn more about the diversity of textiles, patterns and motifs from the Nusantara (Malay Archipelago). Did you know that this region is filled with colourful fabrics, including batik, songket and telepuk?
Here's your chance to create your very own textiles at our drop-in craft booths!
- Telepuk Block Printing - The Kain Telepuk is a rich fabric usually worn by Malay nobility. The Telepuk is a traditional technique involving the process of gilding woven fabric with gold leaf. During this activity, participants will be given pre-carved blocks featuring telepuk motifs to create their own prints on fabric or paper.
- Songket Mini Loom Weaving - The rich and elaborate patterns of the Songket’s weave are exquisite. With the setup of a small loom, participants are taught how to weave their own miniature songket fabric using colorful threads.
- Textile Motifs Fuse Beads Making - Did you know that Malay textiles are heavily influenced by nature? Using Fuse Beads, participants will get to recreate a textile motif such as the bunga mawar (rose) and bunga cina (Chinese flower), while learning the meanings behind the created motifs and how the patterns are repeated.
Sign up on Peatix and get a limited edition merchandise when you show your ticket at the pop-up.
